His performance so far reflects his success at transforming the Republican Party in his image. The most important message from the primaries is the most straightforward: Trump’s coalition is the dominant faction in the GOP. Like McConnell’s announcement, the choices by GOP elected officials in the primary contest signal their acknowledgement of the party’s direction. The share of GOP elected officials who have endorsed Haley isn’t anywhere near as large as her share of the total vote. But a deeper factor also explains the imbalance in support among GOP elected officials.

Republicans Head to the Polls in Iowa

The 2024 presidential election has kicked off in earnest, as Republicans in Iowa head to the polls – trudging through snow and record-setting frigid temperatures – to pick their preferred GOP nominee. “Everyone assumes that Trump is going to have a blowout here, and I'm not sure that’s going to be the case,” says Tim Hagle, political science professor at the University of Iowa. “It seems unlikely – not impossible, but unlikely – for DeSantis to win in Iowa,” Hagle says. “A lot of political commentators have said Iowa is make or break for DeSantis. “If Trump does well there, it means that he’s going to be pulling in evangelicals.

Ron DeSantis, who had staked his campaign on a strong showing in Iowa, came in at a distant second, with 21.2% of the vote. “You helped us get a ticket pushed out of the Hawkeye State,” DeSantis told supporters in Iowa Monday night. And about two-thirds – 66% – of the GOP Iowa voters believe President Joe Biden did not legitimately win the presidency in 2020. The state also prides itself on giving a boost to lesser-known contenders who make the effort to meet one-on-one with Hawkeye State voters. It’s not clear how long DeSantis – who had hoped to win Iowa outright and gain momentum in the race – would be able to continue.

Ames, Iowa CNN —Teresa Garman has attended decades worth of Iowa caucuses, but views Monday’s meeting as the most consequential. In interviews, Iowans expressed an array of opinions on Trump’s legal problems, from anger over what they say they believe is a “witch hunt,” echoing the former president’s criticism, to a desire to move on and focus on issues plaguing the country. Among those who were not considering the former president, 57% said Trump was controversial and 48% said they were concerned about his legal issues. “If Trump is the nominee, it’s going to be about January 6, legal issues, criminal trials,” DeSantis said during a CNN debate Wednesday. “I think that Vivek is, in a roundabout way, even better for Trump than Trump being in there,” Sherman said.

The Undoing of the DeSantis Campaign

The personnel shake-up follows growing frustration among campaign staffers over the effectiveness – or lack thereof – of the PAC’s spending. “It’s not so good,” Carol Weissert, political science professor at Florida State University, says about the state of the DeSantis campaign. To be sure, DeSantis has put in the work in Iowa, having completed his 99-county tour this week. The polling average as of Dec. 4 shows Trump with 45% support in Iowa, with DeSantis at 17% and Haley at 15%. She eclipsed DeSantis for the first time this week in Iowa in a poll by Americans for Prosperity, which is supporting her campaign, showing Haley 1 percentage point ahead of DeSantis – 17% to 16%.

Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting the Republican’s White House bid, abruptly let go three key senior staffers that evening, including an interim CEO who had just been installed nine days earlier. The sudden departures sent shockwaves throughout DeSantis’ political operation, from Tallahassee to Des Moines. One of the dismissed operatives had appeared that day at a super PAC event in Sioux City, Iowa, that featured DeSantis. “They’re a laughingstock.”Jess Szymanski, a spokeswoman for the super PAC, dismissed the outside criticism. After months of watching ads and receiving mailers from the super PAC, voters seemed unaware – and unfazed – by the duplication.

The War on College Campuses

College campuses have always been bastions of protest, where young, energetic students push older generations in the direction of the next social or political reform. Notably, the prevailing notions of the liberal bent of college campuses are not incorrect. According to a 2023 survey by FIRE of roughly 1,500 four-year college professors, 50% identify as liberal, 17% as moderate, and 26% as conservative. Analysts say the recent inflammatory examples that have not only riven college campuses but altered the way many Americans view them also underscore the increasing difficulty observers in the U.S. have of sitting with complex developments. Many of the country’s most elite schools actually perform the worst, according to the 2024 College Free Speech Ranking by FIRE.

Still, the DeSantis campaign remains adamant that the race is far from settled and the timing of these recent broadsides is coming as 2024 is only just now coming into focus for many voters. “The time for contrast was not over the summer when the government was going after (Trump),” said Ryan Tyson, a senior adviser to DeSantis’ campaign. Club for Growth president David McIntosh recently warned about the potential pitfalls of attacking Trump too aggressively. “Every traditional post-production ad attacking President Trump either backfired or produced no impact on his ballot support and favorability,” McIntosh wrote. A new phaseThis new phase of the DeSantis campaign marks a significant departure from the spring and summer, when DeSantis did not always appear comfortable criticizing Trump.

Ron DeSantis for the first time on whether he would support a 15-week federal abortion ban. “Yes, I will,” DeSantis replied to Scott in a moment lost in the crosstalk that engulfed the messy Republican primary debate. DeSantis instead has campaigned on the six-week abortion ban he signed in Florida earlier this year while suggesting other states may have different approaches based on their political environments. In 2022, DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban that did not include exceptions for rape and incest. Just before launching a campaign for president, DeSantis – in the middle of the night and behind closed doors – signed a law to ban abortion in Florida after six weeks with limited exceptions for rape and incest.

The state of the Republican race is this: Trump is not yet unbeatable but the conditions in which he could be beaten are still far from materializing. The New Hampshire poll may boost an impression that Haley is on the rise and with DeSantis ebbing, she could emerge as the strongest anti-Trump challenger. Trump appears to be eying a general election audience that punished Republicans in the midterms over the issue. But DeSantis has jumped at the chance to try to harm Trump with evangelical voters who are very important in the Iowa caucuses. In Iowa, New Hampshire and elsewhere, the race for the Republican nomination is beginning to accelerate.

CNN —There are two Republican primaries as an election season that defies conventional metrics and campaign trail traditions crashes into its fall stretch. Trump has already convinced millions of his supporters that he is the current legitimate president after his false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. Many of the candidates in the second tier appear to be running for the nomination of a Republican Party that may not even exist anymore. Given these numbers, why would Trump drop his boycott and attend the second GOP presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California later this month? “We need to narrow it down to find a leader who can get the Republican Party back on the right track and that could get us back to winning elections again,” Hogan said.

Meade is executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which works to restore voting rights in the state to former felons. Amendment 4 automatically restored voting rights to former felons, except those convicted of murder or sexual offenses, who have completed their sentences. Initially, organizers projected that Amendment 4 would restore voting rights to about 1.4 million Floridians, but as a result of these new hurdles only a little over 600,000 have actually regained their voting rights, Meade said. Even after Amendment 4, felons are required to have completed their sentence before recovering their voting rights in Florida, as in virtually all other states. Intervening to restore those rights to Trump, if he’s convicted of a felony before the election, would represent a stark departure from the clemency board’s typical procedures.

But Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. and other surrogates planned to travel to Milwaukee, where they would have had opportunities to weigh in on national broadcasts before and after the debate in the spin room. Ahead of the debate, some candidates are offering previews of their lines of attack – including criticizing Trump for choosing not to participate. “Every one of us who have qualified for that debate stage ought to be on the stage willing to square off and answer those tough questions,” Pence said. Overall, 42% say Trump is their first choice, followed by 19% supporting DeSantis.

The GOP front-runner is expected to surrender, potentially for fingerprinting and a mug shot, on Thursday or Friday, a senior law enforcement source told CNN. His legal quagmire is likely to yet again dominate the GOP race, drowning out rivals who have so far largely failed to exploit Trump’s four indictments. It’s a tactic that appears to be working among GOP primary voters given his wide polling lead thus far. Ron DeSantis – announced that, as expected, he’d skip the debate in Milwaukee. Though steadfast allies throughout much of the pandemic, Trump and DeSantis, as presidential primary rivals, agree on very little about what transpired during one of the most trying periods in their respective tenures in leadership. Unsaid in the ad was that DeSantis had repeatedly praised Fauci early in the pandemic, calling him “really, really good and really, really helpful” and “really doing a good job.” A CNN KFile review found Trump began harshly criticizing Fauci much earlier than DeSantis. Trump has dismissed the conservative back-slapping of DeSantis’ handling of the pandemic, insisting the governor’s performance wasn’t all that great. By preemptively attacking DeSantis’ pandemic policies, Trump, too, appears aware that voters could see his top rival as stronger on the issue. The shift became an early fault line in the fracturing relationship between Trump and DeSantis.

The next 30 minutes of DeSantis’ speech then demonstrated how Biden might survive despite all the doubts about his performance and capabilities. In that way, DeSantis’ first swing through Iowa showed why Republicans are still at risk in 2024 from a key dynamic that dashed their hopes of a sweeping “red wave” in 2022. Many strategists in both parties believe that dynamic is most likely to recur in 2024 if the GOP nominates Trump. One reason, Republicans argue, is that the eventual nominee likely will talk about these issues less in a general election. Beset by all the difficult domestic conditions DeSantis highlighted, Biden will likely struggle straight through November 2024 to affirmatively convince a majority that his performance deserves another term.

CNN —The Republican presidential field is growing almost by the day, but no candidate has yet offered an effective answer to GOP primary voters on the race’s most compelling question – why they should ditch Donald Trump. Nikki Haley has been on the trail for weeks, appearing in a CNN town hall on Sunday in Iowa. No Republican voters will weigh in for at least six months in early state contests. There’s even less evidence that GOP voters believe that Trump’s legal problems disqualify him from serving as their nominee. In an NBC News poll in April, 68% of Republican voters believed that investigations into Trump were politically motivated attempts to stop him.

Disney did not specifically blame DeSantis for the move, partly citing “changing business conditions.” But the message was clear. In keeping with his bruising political persona, DeSantis reacted defiantly to Disney’s announcement that it would halt the office project. “Ron DeSantis’ failed war on Disney has done little for his limping shadow campaign and now is doing even less for Florida’s economy,” the Trump campaign said in a statement. Another possible GOP primary candidate, former Vice President Mike Pence, also leveraged the Disney announcement to jab DeSantis. Given his political exposure on Disney and the combative political image that is central to his White House hopes, DeSantis probably has no option but to further escalate the showdown.
Supporters are raising defense funds for Daniel Penny, the man charged for killing Jordan Neely on the NYC subway. Penny is facing a manslaughter charge in the death of Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man. While Neely's behavior alarmed some passengers, one eyewitness told The New York Times that Neely never tried to assault anyone. The case has divided New Yorkers, who are grappling with a rise in crime on the New York subway system. "Justice looks like a conviction for murder," Edwards said at a press conference following the announcement of Penny's charges.
